Isang Yun: Réak (1966)

Melody, rhythm, and harmony have traditionally been regarded as the three fundamental elements of Western music. In the twentieth century, however, timbre emerged as an element of equal importance. In the conventional sense, the compositional technique most closely associated with timbre was orchestration — the art of assigning melodies, rhythms, and harmonies to specific instruments and blending them to shape sound. Musicologist Carl Dahlhaus described Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Richard Strauss’s ‹Don Juan› — works that revealed new possibilities in orchestration — as among the roots of musical modernism.

By the 1960s, composers began to expand the conventional concept of harmony into so-called tone clusters: dense aggregates of tones that effectively dismantled melody, rhythm, and harmony, placing timbre — or what might be called a “sound complex” — at the forefront. György Ligeti’s ‹Atmosphères›, made even more famous by its (unauthorized) use in Stanley Kubrick’s film ‹2001: A Space Odyssey›, and Krzysztof Penderecki’s ‹Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima› — whose title is arguably more famous than the piece itself — are representative examples of this trend.

The idea of composing music through sound complexes built from tone clusters was precisely what Isang Yun had been seeking, for it allowed him to translate the sonic world of East Asian music into Western instruments. Yet the sound complexes Yun created differed markedly from those of Western contemporaries such as Ligeti or Penderecki. In Western music, individual tones are fixed, and musical meaning arises from their relationships with other tones. In East Asian music, by contrast, a single tone already possesses vitality: it moves, breathes, and unfolds on its own. Yun’s musical language is founded on this principle — vitalized tones gathering into vitalized harmonies and a vitalized sound complex.

‹Réak› was born from this context. Premiered in 1966 at the Donaueschingen Festival in Germany, the work brought Yun international recognition. Critics hailed Yun as a pioneering composer who brought Eastern philosophy and musical aesthetics into a fully mature synthesis with Western avant-garde technique. The principle of “movement within stillness” (靜中動) embedded in the piece was also embraced by Western composers searching for new ways to organize tone clusters within a musical work, offering them a breakthrough in tone-cluster technique.

The sound complexes in Yun’s music are often described by the term Hauptklang. Depending on which elements within this Hauptklang are emphasized or restrained, the sonority may evoke the sonic world of Korean traditional music — or not — thus allowing for a wide range of interpretations. When a Western conductor unfamiliar with Korean traditional music performs Yun’s works, the result may be music understood solely within a Western framework. Yet, as Umberto Eco famously remarked, “the author should die once he has finished writing”; such a reading, too, can therefore be considered valid.

That said, the sonic world I experienced when the German conductor Roland Kluttig led ‹Réak› with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra was particularly inspiring. What he realized was unmistakably the sound one encounters in masterpieces of Korean traditional music, such as ‹Jongmyo Jeryeak› or ‹Sujecheon›. It was a sound impossible to create without an understanding of the original source — and, for me, it remains the most outstanding performance of ‹Réak› I have heard.

Interestingly, ‹Réak› employs a traditional Korean instrument: the bak, a wooden clapper used in Korean court music to mark the beginning and end of a piece, as well as the close of each section. In ‹Réak›, the bak fulfills a similar role, appearing at the opening and conclusion and at major structural junctures. As in Korean court music, it functions as a device that “cuts through space and anchors silence.” In the score, Yun translated the instrument’s name into German as Peitsche (“whip”), adding “Bak” in parentheses.

(Ouvertüre, 1973/74)

Isang Yun: Ouvertüre (1973/74)

Isang Yun’s ‹Ouvertüre›, composed in 1973, marks a transitional work written before a significant transformation in his musical style. During the 1960s, Yun achieved international recognition with works that combined East Asian concepts – such as the interplay and harmony of yin and yang, motion within stillness (靜中動), and the impermanence of all things (諸行無常) – with processes involving sound planes or tone clusters, characterized by succession, growth, and overlapping. Following his abduction and imprisonment in South Korea due to the East Berlin Incident in 1967 and his release and expulsion in 1969, Yun began to integrate these experiences into his compositions, eventually transitioning to a style more deeply imbued with Korean essence, as epitomized by his ‹Cello Concerto› (1975/76).

According to musicologist Wolfgang Sparrer, ‹Ouvertüre› belongs to Yun’s epoch of “Klangcomposition,” sharing continuity with earlier works such as ‹Réak› (1966) and ‹Loyang› (1962). Sparrer also notes that the piece reveals a more autobiographical dimension, with somber tones dominating the work. As a contextual reference for the work’s atmosphere, Sparrer mentions Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s ‹Ich wandte mich und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der Sonne› (1970), which was performed at the concert where ‹Ouvertüre› was premiered. The work was commissioned by Musikfest Berlin and premiered in 1973 by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Hans Zender.

Yun revised much of the work for its publication in 1974, and the revised version was premiered by the Solingen City Orchestra conducted by Lothar Zagrosek. Structurally, ‹Ouvertüre› is divided into four parts, each further subdivided into two sections.

[Festlicher Tanz] (1988)

Isang Yun: Glissées for Solo Cello (1970)

The title of this piece, Glissées, comes from the French verb "glisser," meaning to glide. In music, it refers to a glissando, but in Isang Yun's ‹Glissées›, it also symbolizes the colorful and ever-changing movements of East Asian music. The cello in this piece sometimes sounds similar to Korean traditional instruments such as the Geomungo, Gayageum, or Haegeum.

In East Asian music, individual tones have vitality and move freely. When Isang Yun translated them into Western notation, he used ornaments, glissando, and other special performance techniques. This is not simply an imitation of East Asian music, but rather, as musicologist Wolfgang Sparrer stated, "in his specific notation and imagination of sounds, they undergo individual alterations and characteristic, pointed emphasis."

Isang Yun wrote ‹Glissées› following his international recognition with ‹Réak› (1966) and other pieces. In those pieces, he built soundscapes by compiling different tones into clusters and giving vitality to individual tones, in order to express the sounds of East Asian music with Western instruments. In contrast, ‹Glissées› focuses on only one instrument, the cello, and explores the microcosmoses that are given birth by the individual tones with vitality.

Korean traditional music, particularly court music, has a fundamental difference from Western music in that the music is segmented by respiration rather than beats. This feature can also be found in ‹Glissées›, and in addition, there are even no bar or time signatures in the score. Therefore, what is important for both the performer and listener is to "breathe" together as a tone is born, grows, rests, and decays.

Segen erlöst. Segen befreit.
Sehen erlöst. Sehen befreit.
Segen. Sehen.

ⓒBoosey & Hawkes

“Segen erlöst. Segen befreit.”

Isang Yun: Symphony No.2 (1984)

Isang Yun received international attention in the 1960s for his unique music style. He reconstructed the sound organization principle of East Asian traditional music with the western avant-garde music of the 20th century. After suffering from the so-called the ‘East Berlin Incident,’ he continued to change his style constantly. For example, he included non-musical ‘messages’ such as freedom and peace in his works, or pursuing the Tao and Nirvana through music.

Isang Yun’s second Symphony, which he composed in 1984, consists of a musical narrative structure that leads to conflict and violence, followed by tears and anguish, and then resistence and hope. In that sense, it seems similar to his other works such as Exemplum in Memoriam Kwangju (1981), Chamber Symphony No. 2 (1989), and Engel in Flammen (1994). He shows some important characteristics of his music during this period: the brass leads the violence, while strings resist it. The woodwinds, meanwhile, mediate between the two, and percussion functions as the ‘background’ of the incident.

What sets this symphony apart from other works is the conclusion of the musical narrative. The Hauptton (main tone) that makes up this piece starts with C♯, then the momentum rises little by little through intense struggle. But at the last moment, just ahead of the semitone A, which symbolizes the world of Tao, hope is thwarted. The string instrument, which has yielded to the trombone’s brutal figure of the descending fifth, moves down the fifth from G♯ and returns to the original tone, the C♯. In response to this, musicologist Wolfgang Sparrer suggests that Yun is “pleading against the ways of the world by imitating them.”

(Pièce concertante) (1976)

Isang Yun: Pièce concertante (1976)

By blending the sound organization principles of East Asian traditional music into the 20th century Western avant-garde techniques, Isang Yun created unique music styles. In that aspect, he was praised as “the first composer to perfectly express oriental ideas and musical techniques by combining them with Western music usage.” Isang Yun’s music is therefore a matter of understanding the difference between Western music and Eastern music from his point of view.

In Western music, individual tones are fixed and thus musical meanings are created by establishing relationships with other tones. However, in East Asian music, an individual tone alone have its own vitality and forms a microcosmos. Also, microcosmoses gather to build a grand universe, and the grand universe already exists in each microcosmos. In this way, the key to Isang Yun’s musical language is to organize vitalized tones to form vitalized chords or ‘soundscapes’.

Another noteworthy thing about Isang Yun’s ‹Pièce concertante› (1976) is that Korean traditional music (especially ‘Jeongak’) is segmented by respiration, while Western music is generally divided by beats. In traditional Korean music, it is not always a problem even if the attack of the tones does not match exactly for each person participating in the ensemble. The important thing there is to “breathe” together.

‹Pièce concertante› is a work that may appear to be Western modern music. However, in terms of ‘breath’ that was just mentioned, the tones (which make up the vitalized soundscapes) grow and then rest. In that aspect, I can feel the elegance of Korean style a bit more than Isang yun’s previous works such as ‹Loyang› (1962) and ‹Réak› (1966). It seems important to both the performer and the listener to feel that breath, which Koreans are familiar with (and yet at the same time seem to be unfamiliar).

Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that Isang Yun wrote this piece in the same year as his cello concerto. Yun began to incorporate a non-musical ‘message’ in his work for the first time through that cello concerto. At this point, his musical idioms also underwent a major transition. Since then, he constantly developed his styles further by containing more Korean (or East Asian) soundscapes.

Isang Yun: Bara (1960)

"Do not expect an ordinary dancing music, but visualize the mystical and meditative atmosphere of a Buddhist temple. There, the monks and nuns perform a dance for driving out evil spirits or a prayer dance, leading to extreme concentration; then, tense and in utmostly slow movement, they gradually fall into nirvanic rapture. In the first bars of my orchestral piece ‹Bara›, you will encounter both meditative calm and nirvanic tension." (Isang Yun)

The subject matter of Isang Yun’s ‹Bara›, composed in 1960, is the Bara dance of Buddhism. Occasionally, we hear rhythms that can generally be associated with body movements, but in fact, this work does not directly depict the Bara dance. It abstractly expresses Buddhist enlightenment mediated by the ritual movement. The individual tones that make up the work are vitalized according to the principles of East Asian music. Isang Yun likened this to the calligraphy in East Asia, which is contrasted with European penmanship. However, in ‹Bara›, one of Yun’s earliest works, the vitality of those individual tones is still weak compared to the later works.

The vitalized chords or sound layers, formed by those vitalized tones, also 'behaves' in his early style. The East Asian idea that parts embody the whole, while the whole in turn manifests itself in every single part, coexists with the twelve-tone technique of the West. As Yun himself pointed out, "In this early work sprouted, in typical forms, all those styles employed in my entire subsequent compositions."

Isang Yun: Nore (1964)

"‹Nore› is like Pansori in its essence. Even though there are many Western music titles to denote the act of singing or a song, Isang Yun deliberately named this piece “Nore (literally meaning a song).” This was probably because Yun wanted the cello to sing according to the vocal techniques not of western music, but of Korean traditional music. The way the piano fills the space in the middle is similar to Chuimsae (exclamations with percussive effects) of a Pansori Drummer." (Bong Ihn Koh, Cellist)

In Western music, individual tones are fixed and thus musical meanings are created by establishing relationships with other tones. However, in East Asian music, an individual tone alone lives in itself and forms a microcosmos. Isang Yun compared this to the difference between calligraphy and penmanship. And he also said, from a Taoist perspective, as follows: "In East Asia, a person does not make music alone. In fact, the sound exists there before one plays or sings music. […] Therefore, people there will say that music is not what one composes, but what he or she gives birth to. That is, a small part of cosmos is born."

In order to translate East Asian ideas, which Yun wanted to convey, into Western music, it requires a great number of ornaments, trills, glissandi, and vibratos with changing speed, as well as subtle and complex variations in pitch. In Yun’s late works, the 'style' in which the individual notes live inside his music changed into a way of embracing a more Korean sound. Unlike his other works of the similar period, ‹Nore› is unique because it already prefigures his later style.

In 1964, Park Chung-Hee, then president of South Korea, was about to visit West Germany, and Korean musicians there prepared a welcome concert for him. Yun composed ‹Nore› at the request of a cello student. However, the performance of this piece had to be cancelled because the performer could not cope with the difficult technique required by the piece within a short period of time. Ironically, Yun was kidnapped three years later by Park’s regime on suspicion of espionage and was imprisoned in Korea. During that time, the score was found at Yun's house in Berlin, and was published and premiered in 1968.

Isang Yun: Chamber Symphony No. 2 (1989)

Isang Yun’s second chamber symphony was composed and performed in 1989. It was the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, and Yun gave the subtitle ‘Den Opfern der Freiheit,’ meaning “To the Victims of Freedom.” Musicologist Wolfgang Sparrer, though taking notice more of “victims” than “freedom,” said that this is not a funeral symphony. Instead, Sparrer believed that it reflected Yun’s own difficult experience in his struggle for society’s freedom.

This symphony’s authorial ideas and dramaturgy resemble those of ‹Exemplum in memoriam Kwangju›(1981). For example, they each have three movements, and strings are in solidarity with woodwinds and against brass in the outer movements. In addition, the second movements of both are filled with elements of tragedy. However, this symphony is different from ‹Exemplum in memoriam Kwangju› in that it does not present emotional impact as bitterly as the latter. Rather, it contemplates tragedy and conflicts more calmly.

At the end of the first movement, Isang Yun forcefully writes the note “A,” which he had used since his Cello Concerto (1976) to symbolize the world of Idea, of gods or of Tao. The sudden appearance of this “A” in the midst of unresolved discords could suggest a bold declaration that this is the destination where we eventually have to reach someday. The middle section of the second movement, when the music swells up, gives sublime feelings.

At about the halfway of the third movement, the conflict is 'resolved' very quickly. It sounds like there has been no genuine settlement but a deceitful compromise, only to conceal the ongoing problems. This middle section ends up with the fiercely growling sound of the brass. The strings and woodwinds band together again for a struggle. Instead of with the note “A,” as in the case of the loud cry at the end of the opening movement, this finale comes to a close with a trill between G and G♯. At the same moment, the F by trumpet and B by trombone create diminished 5th ― diminished 12th to be more exact ― chord, giving terrifying warning signs.

Isang Yun: Exemplum in memoriam Kwangju (1981)

"Beyond this historical event, which can be understood as 'an example', a universal example, the work wants to be a memorial in mourning for the victims and a reminder of the fight for freedom in the world.” (Isang Yun)

The word “exemplum,” which Isang Yun decided to use in the title for this music, literally means model, precedent, and example. The title stands upon the recognition that the Gwangju Democratic Uprising is not just a tragedy in a small country of East Asia, but an exemplary world-historical event that should be taken into account when discussing a democratic past. The use of Latin, which is the traditional Western universal language, in the title should be understood in this context as well.

Eunmi Hong, a musicologist, advises that this piece not be taken as a documented event. Exemplum is a programmatic work, but Yun did not portray the actual incident realistically. Instead, he transcribed it into orchestral music, a form of abstract language. It seems that he had tried not to evolve tragedy into a spectacle. In the score, he gives instruction as follows: “The percussion should be placed as far back as possible. The dynamics should be adapted to the room conditions; it should be dramatic, but never unbearably loud.”

We can also understand in this context the reason why a Korean traditional musical instrument “Bak” is used instead of the roaring sound of a gunshot in the “shooting scene.” Bak has been considered a musical instrument that cuts open the space and makes silence dwell. By purposely eliminating realistic sounds of actual shooting scenes, Yun enhances the emotional effect instead of presenting a spectacle. In that respect, it resembles a slow-motion imaging technique, which removes or distorts sound effects.

This single-movement work has three major sections. In the first one, while the strings and woodwinds are in solidarity and resistance, the brasses growl at times in opposition, intensifying the conflict before it finally reaches a pandemonium. Then, in the words of musicologist Wolfgang Sparrer, the second part starts with the dismal stillness after the massacre and wakes up with the sound of brass and timpani after the paralysis. At that point, grief follows.

In the third part, again, a resistance begins. In contrast to the first part, even the ferocious cry of the brass can not prevent the huge flow of individual sounds. Wolfgang Sparrer saw this as a march in a fantasy, as well as a prospect and plea for the future. Meanwhile, Hanns-Werner Heister pointed out that the end of the composition is not a true finale but a procession that continues toward the ideal world.

The “dramaturgy” in this work is related to a developmental view of history. However, Isang Yun's technique of dealing with the individual tones comes from the East Asian worldview. They grow and circulate in their own vitality, and then fade, without developing toward a goal. Heister suggests that Yun had let "the things of past completely vanish without a trace" in this piece, which he feels implied that "those who brought repression, hunger, and death to the Koreans would also disappear."

Isang Yun: Poems of the Nakdong River

Isang Yun wrote a song ‹Nakdong River› while in Korea, and it is quite well-known through Isang Yun Children’s Song Festival. However, there is another ‹Nakdong River› by Yun himself that elderly persons in Gyeongnam Province still remember. Euy-Jang Jin, the former mayor of Tongyeong City, mentioned that the latter was also called “The song of Gyeognam citizens.” Seung-gi Lee, a film expert who served as the head of the Masan Culture Bureau, remarked that it was sung at every morning gathering in Gyeongnam area schools. He also added that it was inserted into the movie ‹Nakdong River›, released in 1952 but lost, probably during the Korean War.

There seems to be an indirect relationship between the two songs of ‹Nakdong River› along with the movie of the same title, and Yun’s symphonic poem titled ‹Poems of the Nakdong River›. In a letter dated November 30, 1956, to his wife Sooja Lee, Yun stated that he had begun composing that symphonic poem in Korea, then concluded the first two movements in Paris, where he also completed the final third movement in the evening of November 29. In April that same year, Yun received the Seoul City Culture Award with his first string quartet. In June, he left Korea to study abroad, and learned composition at the Paris Conservatory, where he also encountered European modern music.

In other letters to his wife during his days in Paris, Yun occasionally reveals anxiety over the progress of his learning. In regards to ‹Poems of the Nakdong River›, he did not seem to feel confident, saying “I cannot expect much because I have put in too many conventional elements.” In this regard (and in some other as well), and in view of the fact that the work was based on traditional functional harmonies, we can guess why ‹Poems of the Nakdong River› has not come into light until now. However, when we treat this piece from the perspective of modern Korean people, we can understand that Yun had already been shining as a composer since the time it was written.

Yun originally appears to have designed it as a six-movement scheme before modifying it to three movements in the process. In the manuscript, the first movement was to be a prologue, followed by five movements, respectively titled Twilight, Hangawi (Korean Thanksgiving), Field of Reeds, Song of Bumper Years, and Epilogue. However, the completed composition consists of three movements: Prologue, An Evening of the Nakdong River, and Dances.

In the early 1950s, the Korean Peninsula was swallowed up in a civil war, which, at least partially, was a proxy war in behalf of the United States, China, and Russia. The Nakdong River was the battlefield where South Korea turned the tide and defeated North Korea. During this period, Yun was a music teacher in Busan, one of the major cities in the Nakdong River Basin. After the war, he went to Seoul with his family, where he spent about three years as a composer and a part-time lecturer at Seoul National University and Duksung Women's University. As can be seen from the historical background, and unlike what the initial conception based on 6 movements might suggest, the first two movements of this work are full of dark sentiment.

It is the “dramaturgy” that leads this piece; the second movement is in an arch form, but the outer movements do not follow the traditional formal structure. The first movement commences with a grand fanfare, and the ascending figure in the interval of fourths becomes the seed of the entire movement. That sustains the formal coherence and consistency of the entire composition. The sudden texture contrast between this fanfare and the subsequent melody reminds us of a movie scene transition from the signal (that indicates an opening of a movie) to the actual movie. That's why we need to reconsider its relation to the film ‹Nakdong River›.

In the first movement, sorrow flows like a river, and sobs turn into wailing. When that wailing has trailed away, an anxious beat appears, which sounds like the last beating of the heart. The movement ends with two sharp squeaks. The second movement is mainly led by the oboe melody, which sounds like a melancholic barcarolle, or in some sense, Korean pallbearers' dirge. In the third movement, an exciting rhythm appears like a manifesto, driving out the tragedy.

In the middle of the third movement, a melody, distinctly in the Korean folk song style, makes appearance. Its interval structure is identical to that of a melodic fragment in the Korean folk song ‹Miryang Arirang›. In contrast to ‹Miryang Arirang›, which consists of Semachi Rhythms, or Semachi Jangdan in Korean traditional terminology, the melody here resembles the Gutgeori Jandan of ‹Taepyunga›. As a result of combining ‹Miryang Arirang› and Gutgeori Jangdan, the melody sounds similar to the ‹Korean Barcarolle›.
