관현악 모음곡 ‹웨스트 사이드 스토리 - 심포닉 댄스›는 9개 악장으로 되어 있다. 두 가지 판본의 영화와 오리지널 사운드 트랙 등으로도 널리 알려진 뮤지컬 선율들이 관현악 모음곡의 주요 음소재가 되고 있다. 이 가운데 특히 유명한 발코니 장면(투나잇)이 6악장에, 댄스파티 장면의 ’맘보’가 4악장에 배치되었다. ’맘보’는 스타 지휘자 구스타보 두다멜이 앙코르곡으로 자주 지휘해 유행을 일으켰던 곡이며, 두다멜은 스필버그 영화 ‹웨스트 사이드 스토리›의 음악을 지휘하기도 했다.
‹웨스트 사이드 스토리›는 1957년 뉴욕 빈민가의 푸에르토리코 출신 이민자들과 기존 주민 사이의 갈등을 배경으로 하는 작품으로, 셰익스피어의 고전 ‹로미오와 줄리엣›을 원형으로 하고 있다.
L. Bernstein: West Side Story - Symphonic Dances (1960)
‹West Side Story› is a musical with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents, and is composed and premiered in 1957. Bernstein later extracted the major scenes of the musical and published them as an orchestral suite in 1960, calling it ‹Symphonic Dances›. In 1961, the musical was adapted into a film and released worldwide. In 2021, filmmaker Steven Spielberg released a new film adaptation of the musical. Sondheim passed away in November 2021, just before Spielberg’s film was released on the next month. Three days after Sondheim’s passing, a stage production directed by Spielberg premiered in New York.
The orchestral suite ‹West Side Story - Symphonic Dances› consists of nine movements, using melodies from the musical which is well known also by the two film versions. In particular, the famous balcony scene (Tonight) is featured in the sixth movement, while the “Mambo” dance party scene is placed in the fourth movement. Mambo is a popular tune often conducted as an encore by star conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who also conducted the music for Spielberg’s ‹West Side Story› film.
‹West Side Story› is set against the backdrop of conflict between Puerto Rican immigrants and existing residents in a New York City slum in 1957, and is based on Shakespeare’s classic play ‹Romeo and Juliet›.
