“너의 젊음이 너의 노력으로 얻은 상이 아니듯, 나의 늙음도 내 잘못으로 받은 벌이 아니다.”
박범신 작가의 소설 『은교』에 나오는 이 유명한 말은 레오시 야나체크 현악사중주 2번 ’비밀 편지’를 들을 때면 떠오르는 말이기도 하다. 야나체크의 ’은교’는 처음 만났을 때 20대 후반이었던 유부녀 카밀라 스퇴슬로바(Kamila Stösslová)였는데, 야나체크는 그보다 38살 더 많았다. 두 사람은 편지를 700통 넘게 주고받았지만, 사실은 야나체크가 짝사랑을 했을 뿐인 듯하다. 두 사람 사이에는 키스 이상의 신체 접촉은 없었다는 것이 정설이다.
카밀라를 만난 뒤로 야나체크는 걸작을 줄줄이 쏟아낸다. 대기만성형 작곡가였던 야나체크의 ’뮤즈’가 카밀라였던 셈이다. 그리고 현악사중주 2번 ’비밀 편지’를 발표할 때쯤에는 드디어 카밀라가 야나체크의 사랑을 받아주기 시작했는데, 카밀라와 함께 소풍을 갔던 야나체크는 그만 감기에 걸리고, 그것이 폐렴이 되어 죽고 만다. ’비밀 편지’의 공식 초연은 그 직후에 있었다.
이 작품은 야나체크가 음악으로 쓴 연애편지라 할 수 있다. 그리고 원어 표제인 “Listy důvěrné”에서 체코어 důvěrné(두볘르네)는 ’비밀’이라는 뜻도 있지만, 영어 ’intimate’에 해당하는 뜻도 있다. 성적인 의미를 포함해서 친밀하다는 뜻이다. 그래서 우리말 표제로 ’비밀 편지’가 널리 쓰이기는 하지만, ’은밀한 편지’가 더 적절하다는 생각이 들기도 한다.
이 작품은 후기 낭만주의 음악 양식을 벗어나지 않으면서도 몇십 년 뒤를 내다보게 하는 현대성이 공존하는 야나체크의 대표작이다. 그래서 현대음악에서 곧잘 들을 수 있는 충격적인 음향이 작곡가의 불타는 사랑을 효과적으로 표현하는 장치가 되고 있다. 특히 4악장이 끝날 때쯤 애틋한 선율과 폭력적인 소음이 교차하는 대목이 백미다. 그리고 바로 앞서 마치 시계 초침이 딸깍거리는 듯한 음형은 마치 작곡가가 제 죽음을 예견한 듯해 안타까움을 더한다.
L. Janáček: Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters”
“Just as your youth is not a reward earned through your efforts, my old age is not a punishment received for my faults.”
This renowned quote from Bum-shin Park’s novel, ‹Eungyo›, often comes to my mind when listening to Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2, ‹Intimate Letters›. Janáček’s Eungyo, Kamila Stösslová, was a married woman in her late twenties when they first met, while Janáček was 38 years her senior. Despite exchanging over 700 letters, Janáček’s feelings remained unreciprocated. It is widely acknowledged that their relationship never progressed beyond kissing.
Following his encounter with Kamila, Janáček produced several masterpieces, with her serving as his inspiration. By the time he premiered his String Quartet No. 2, ‹Intimate Letters›, Kamila began to reciprocate his affection. However, tragedy struck when Janáček fell ill and died of pneumonia after a picnic with Kamila. The official premiere of ‹Intimate Letters› soon followed.
This composition can be viewed as Janáček’s musical interpretation of love letters. The Czech word “důvěrné” in the original title, Listy důvěrné, encompasses both “secret” and “intimate,” suggesting intimate connotations. Hence, while the Korean title emphasizes “secret,” “Intimate Letters” might be a more suitable translation.
This work, blending late-Romantic musical styles with modernity, offers a glimpse into the future while retaining traditional elements. The striking sounds, often encountered in contemporary music, effectively convey the composer’s fervent passion. Particularly noteworthy is the fourth movement, where tender melody and vehement noise intersect. Preceding this, a rhythm akin to a ticking clock imbues a sense of melancholy, as if the composer foresaw his own demise.
