Music criticism needs to be analytical, and performance criticism needs to be based on performance analysis. From this point of view, some examples of critical analysis and analytical criticism over music performances are reviewed. Subsequently, possibilities that performance criticism could be accepted as musicology are considered. Finally, the conductor Myung-Whun Chung was analytically criticized as an example of performance criticism based on performance analysis.
Theorists such as Nicholas Cook and John Rink showed recently that analytical procedures can be applied to music performances. Now that musical performances can be analyzed scientifically, they could also be criticized analytically. Therefore, possibilities are opened up that the concept of performance criticism as musicology could be accepted.
For the growth of performance criticism based on performance analysis, communications between journalistic criticism and performance analysis should be improved. Additionally, job security for critics must be provided in advance.
