라벨이 이 작품에 재즈 리듬을 사용한 일은 재즈의 본고장이라 할 수 있는 미국에서는 그때까지만 해도 그리 흔치 않은 일이었으며, 이것을 두고 라벨은 “재즈는 현대 작곡가에게 매우 풍부하고 생생한 영감의 원천이며 재즈에 영향 받은 미국 작곡가들이 너무도 적다는 사실이 놀랍다”라고도 했다.
라벨 ‹피아노 협주곡 G장조›는 음악 만화·드라마로 국내에서도 큰 반향을 일으켰던 ‹노다메 칸타빌레› (니노미야 토모코 원작, TV 드라마와 애니메이션 등으로도 알려짐) 전체 이야기에서 매우 중요한 비중을 차지하는 곡으로 알려지기도 했다.
M. Ravel: Piano Concerto in G major
Written between 1929 and 1931, this piece exemplifies Ravel’s musical style in his later years. Bright and cheerful melodies, jazzy rhythms, flamboyant tones, and folk music elements of the Basque Country characterize this composition. The Basque Country is a region between Spain and France, and it appears that Ravel was influenced by his mother’s Basque heritage. Musicologist Naesun Lee commented on this piece as follows: “Assessing by its musical character, it’s safe to call this piece a Basque rhapsody.”
Ravel was a master of orchestration and had a talent for infusing his music with extravagant colors. In this piece, French and Spanish musical styles harmonically blend to showcase Ravel’s splendid orchestration, incorporating various percussion instruments such as the whip, woodblock, tam-tam, and triangle. As sumptuous colors are the key characteristic of this piece, it demands great technical abilities from all players.
Incorporating jazz rhythm into his music was a move few others followed at the time in America, the birthplace of jazz. Ravel remarked on this matter by saying, “Jazz is a very rich and vital source of inspiration for modern composers and I am astonished that so few Americans are influenced by it.”
Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major became hugely popular in Asia through ‹Nodame Cantabile› (original story by Ninomiya Tomoko, produced as animation and TV drama), well known in Korea through its music, animation, and TV drama.
